How Rafode Microfinance Digitalised Its Loan Operations With CredifyOS
Rafode Limited · Kisumu, Kenya ·
Non-deposit taking MFI ·
Rafode Limited is a microfinance institution headquartered in Kisumu, Kenya, serving rural communities across Western and Nyanza regions. With over 500 groups and 5,000+ members — the majority of whom are women — Rafode provides group loans, individual business loans, asset financing, green energy loans, and education loans to borrowers who have historically been underserved by formal financial institutions.
Rafode’s mission is simple: change lives by making credit accessible to rural Kenya. But as the institution grew, the systems holding it together weren’t keeping up.
The Challenge
Running a growing MFI on spreadsheets and manual processes.
Rafode was doing the hard work of financial inclusion across multiple branches in rural Kenya. What it didn’t have was the infrastructure to match its ambition.
Loan applications moved through paper-based workflows — filled out by hand, reviewed manually, and approved through a process that was slow and error-prone. Repayment tracking lived in spreadsheets that required constant updating, with no automated reminders to keep borrowers on schedule. When a member missed a payment, the team often found out too late.
Branch managers had no real-time view of what was happening across the portfolio. Month-end reporting meant days of consolidating figures across disconnected files — a process that consumed significant staff time and still produced reports that were already out of date by the time leadership saw them.
And for Rafode’s members — women in rural communities juggling farming, small businesses, and family responsibilities — there was no digital channel to check their loan balance, make a payment, or apply without travelling to a branch.
The institution was growing. Its systems were holding it back.
The Solution
One platform for loans, teams, branches, and members.
Rafode implemented CredifyOS across its operations, replacing manual workflows with a single digital platform covering every stage of the loan lifecycle.
Loan officers could now create and submit applications digitally, with a structured multi-stage approval workflow routing each application from BDO through to Operations Manager and Finance — all tracked, all timestamped, all in one place.
Automated repayment reminders reduced the manual chasing that had consumed loan officer time. Overdue accounts escalated automatically, giving management visibility into at-risk loans before they became defaults.
Branch managers and leadership got live dashboards — real portfolio performance, repayment trends, and branch comparisons — updated in real time, not at month-end. SASRA-ready reports could be generated and exported in minutes rather than days.
And for Rafode’s members, the CredifyOS mobile app gave them a digital channel for the first time — loan balances, repayment schedules, and payment capability from their phone, without visiting a branch.
The Outcome
Rafode’s operations went from paper-heavy and reactive to digital and in control.
Loan processing that previously moved through manual handoffs now runs through a structured digital workflow — faster decisions, fewer errors, and a clear audit trail at every stage. Loan officers spend less time on paperwork and more time with members.
Leadership no longer waits for month-end to know what’s happening across the portfolio. Real-time dashboards mean problems are visible early — and early visibility means early intervention.
For Rafode’s members, the shift has been equally meaningful. A mobile app channel — designed for simplicity and built for rural use — means members can engage with their loans from wherever they are.
